SF: Looking for musicians for classic calypso band

We've got our vocalist, banjolele player, clarinetist and trumpeter...now I'm looking for the backbone stuff: guitarist (capable of swing style rhythm), upright bassist, percussionist (capable of Afro-Carribean styles).

We'll be performing the classic calypso of the '30s - '50s. Atilla the Hun, Lord Invader, Sir Lancelot, Lord Kitchener and other nobles... Although some of our members come from other areas, the band is based in the East Bay (Berkeley rehearsal space).

Just a side-project for fun and love of the music.

NYC (B'klyn) West Indian Day Parade 2005

Damn, once again the energy was off the chain!!!
This time, I believe there was less violence though. I attended this year's festivities with a new sweetheart so maybe that's why I had so much more fun ;-) We went to a neighborhood lot party (tents set-up, DJ + great food/drink) on Sunday and then an all-inclusive party later that nite that was really great... Partying till about 5am!!!

By the time we woke-up on Monday, we rushed off to Eastern Pkwy around 3pm. This was the 1st time my honey ever came to NYC (and the festival) as an adult, so the parade was quite exciting to say the least; there's so many people compared to her local Jump-Off in Montreal. We hooked up with my homeboys/girls, too -- What a ball!

At the parade, we ate so much damn food (rice & peas/jerk chicken of course/THE best curried goat I've ever tasted/Panamanian Hojalda/sliced Mango in salt & hot sauce/and we cooled off with Mauby & Sorrell Sorbet -- Mmmmmmmmm ~ And don't forget the Guiness, baby!!!!!!!

Hi. My boyfriend and I want to go to Trinidad for Carnival, but it's SOoooo fricking expensive, and I can't find anywhere to camp.

Do you have a quiet room we could stay in (list sleeper here), or know of a place that's cheap to chill out or camp.

Either way, hope we can make some new friends down there:) And who knows, you may want to visit us in Antigua?

A lot of banging Bajan music this year from Square Roots (new Square One - Alison Hinds), Edwin Yearwood (solo this year), Rupee (has a great new jump up tune called interesting enough "Jump Up"), plus all the usual suspects- Lil Rick, TC, Gillo, Captain Sawyer, etc... Heard a nice Double Xplojun tune with Donnella Weekes also.

CELLspace is a volunteer-based collaborative art center which fosters community through art and education, performance and community building. Through cooperative relationships and multi-disciplinary programs, we encourage the celebration of intergenerational and cross-cultural collaborations.

CELL, (Collectively Explorative Learning Labs), offers communal art workshops and learning labs in a variety of artistic mediums. Our 10,000 square foot facility serves as an arts incubator, enabling emerging Bay Area artists to create, develop, exhibit, and perform new work in an affordable, cooperative, and collaborative environment.

We are currently seeking creative individuals to teach during our Summer (June-August) season, and potentially continue with us for following seasons.

*Painting (intro and advanced techniques using oils,
acrylics, tempura and water on various traditional and
non-traditional surfaces.

*Public (Guerilla) Art (silk-screening on cloth and
paper, stenciling, wheatpaste and banner making,
large puppet/ figure making, muralism and spray
painting).

* Traditional/ Cultural Art (inc: Cartoneria (using paper
and recycled materials), pi?ata making, Mexican tin +
copper stamping + carving, Mihndi(henna paint),
origami, African mask making, lithography, etching,
linocut,woodcut...etc).

*Maille (Chain mail) (inc. clothing/ armor, inlays,
jewelry, bags,... ).

*Costumes (inc: wings, clothing, masks, using beads
for clothing and jewelry,latex clothing...).

*DIY Classes (book binding, papermaking, gifts, bags,
etc. Integrated class focusing on DIY craft
techniques for creating goods)

*Art Therapy (inc. all forms of artistic mediums
developed by an experienced art therapist/ healer)

*DIY Musical Instruments (inc. glass goblets, Poor
Lady's Gamelan, percussion devices using miniature
mics, spoons, washboards, bass instruments, etc.)

*Music Classes (for not as popular instruments, such
as: the theramin, singing saw, harmonica,accordion
and more).

*Dance Classes (inc. Flamenco, Salsa, Hooping …'''')

*Film Classes (history of film and different genres,
global films, documentaries...)

*Exercise, Kick Boxing, Karate, Jujitsu, Tai Chi and

good west indian food in the SF, Calif. area!

for those of you in the bay area in CA, there's a restaurant in berkeley called jamaican house. it's really good. don't know the exact street addy i can find out. it's near the corner of san pablo and university aveues.

there are VERY few west indian restaurants in the san francisco bay area. they never seem to stay open! :-( i've even thought about throwing my hat into the ring just to increase the number of choices!

in any event, **jamaican house on san pablo avenue in berkeley** is great. they have dumplings (bakes to me), curry goat, rice and peas....you know. the good stuff. it's buffet style so you get to choose a main dish and the number of side you want. oh! and they have tasty condiments like a tamarind sauce. oh yeah...

aside from the food, the layout is welcoming & colorful (and wheelchair accessible). they recycle to so don't even think about throwing away your eating utensils!

if any of you get a chance to go, let me know what you think!

Kevin Lyttle's debut album for Atlantic is due out on 7/27. It has a total of 14 tracks, including hit singles Turn Me On and Last Drop (feat. Spragga Benz, also Mama Mia).

Rupee's debut on the same label is tentatively scheduled for September. Are they trying to make it go head-to-head with Sean Paul's new one?

What are your favourite Caribbean foods and drinks?

There was an incredibly refreshing drink that I had in Grenada a few times called Babalay(sp?). I think it was made from soursop (no pips!), condensed milk and probably other ingredients which I can't remember.

Also I loved 'oildown' with either fish or meat. God that yam tasted good!

I jumped Trini Carnival for the first time this year. I have promised myself, never to miss another Trini Carnival ever again. The fetes were good, the people were nice and the soca is still ringing in my ears.

1) We have just announced our band launch for 2004, peep www.caribcrew.com for more info- last year was our first year on the road, and we took 2nd place band of the year and 1st place DJ truck!

2) Miami Carnival is two days this year!!! Saturday October 9 at a location TBA, a more scaled down thing like Carnival Monday in Trini, but the big news is SUNDAY OCTOBER 10 THE ROAD MARCH IS ON SOUTH BEACH!!!!!!

3) If you've never been to Miami Carnival- it is huge- 100,000 plus people, every major soca act, lots of mas and pan, nuff nuff fete, in a much friendlier vibe to out of towners than Labour Day on the Parkway

I'll be there, jumping with Frenchman's - haven't been back to JA for Carnival since the mid-90s, so it should be interesting, but I was there in Feb before and after T&T and the soca vibes were real strong, at least at the Bacchanal Jamaica Mas Camp.

Carnivals in Cali

Since a lot of us on tribe live in Cali- here is a rundown on Carnival out here- please add comments/corrections/additions:

San Fran Carnival - Memorial Day Sunday in SF- a big Carnival, a few West Indian contingents, mostly Brazil/Latin groups, but still a good lime

LA Carnival - in October, the week after Miami Carnival (which is Columbus Day Sunday)- been to it twice, played mas this year, it leaves a lot to be desired- i can comment more if you're interested

San Diego?

Sacramento?
