I just heard the news on WBAI tonight. They said the WICP is the largest ethnic festival in the US. Pretty impressive that they beat out St. Patrick's in NYC!

Carlos is a legend in B'klyn!
W. Indian Day Parade draws well over 2 Million people each year... plus, Carnival is more than merely one day. There are lots of events going on for about four days!!! It's especially exciting if you embrace the culture.
Naw, the St. Paddy's Parade isn't nearly as big... it's pretty damn weak if you ask me! I'd say it's even smaller than the Halloween Parade in the Village, and DEFINITELY smaller than the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Yeah, read this article... ABC says it's more than 3 Million... that's actually more realistic!

Tue, January 23, 2007 - 11:54 PMNot saying I didn't believe it. Just saying I was surprised and impressed. I've never been able to attend the festival. I haven't been to NY since 1989 or so. -

Wed, January 24, 2007 - 10:52 AMWish we had a visible community like that here. Unless you're talking Jamaicans, island folks here are a bit more dispersed. I sure wish there were folks doing OLD school calypso. Tried to start a group to do it but it fizzled. -

Yeah, there's nothing like ol' skool Soca & Calypso... I absolutely LOVE Mighty Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, David Rudder, Arrow, Superblue, Chalkie, Shadow, Square One!

Wed, January 24, 2007 - 9:34 PMHeh. I'm talking even OLDER school than that: Houdini, Macbeth, Lord Invader, King Radio, Roaring Lion, Sir Lancelot, etc. etc.
Although I dig Sparrow and Kitchen and have to hear more of the later dudes. -

Yeah, I know about them... Atilla the Hun + all those cats you named.
My Dad turned me onto this music when I was a lil' tyke ;-)
Too bad this music isn't requested -- Even among Caribbean party-goers.
